Wow, does time ever fly! It is already the middle of November and as the temperature creeps lower, we continue to keep very busy in Room 4G! At this point in the school year, Room 4G students are really developing their collaboration skills through a number of ongoing group activities and projects.
In Reading, 4G students have been honing their small group discussion skills through "Book Club" talks. Students have been sharing leadership roles, using the text to support their ideas, responding effectively to their teammates, and reflecting on how to improve their group's practice. It is quite impressive to watch students take ownership over their book discussions and ensure that all group members are fully included! In addition, small groups of "Vocabulary Detectives" are using their word identification strategies to infer the meanings of new vocabulary. Ask your child to act out the words "overpowering" and "flabbergasted"!
In Social Studies, 4th graders are embarking on their first U.S. geography project. Partners are working together to identify relevant information and collect research from atlases in order to become "experts" on various regions of the country. In the coming weeks, students will use their information to create maps that represent the landforms, climates, resources, landmarks, and population density of their regions!
Room 4G students are now published writers! Last week students completed their first personal narrative that required students to go through all five stages of the writing process--brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing and publishing! I was amazed with students' abilities to support each other through the revising process--providing each other with constructive feedback and ideas on how to integrate descriptive language and improve their stories!
I look forward to meeting with 4G parents in the coming weeks as we continue on with our Fall Conferences! Until then, stay warm and please enjoy a lovely Thanksgiving with your family!
